Chinese CPU maker Hygon to acquire HPC company Sugon

Chinese supercomputer maker Sugon and chip designer Hygon Information Technology have announced a merger plan, marking the latest consolidation in the country’s high-performance computing sector amid US export restrictions. Hygon, which was founded in 2014, specializes in the design of central processing units (CPUs) and so-called deep computing units, an accelerator card specially designed for artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning. It’s first CPU was the result of an AMD-China joint venture that transferred the original Zen design from AMD. (In 2016, when AMD struck the deal, it had 25% gross margins and was losing money. Licensing provided needed cash.) The Chinese organization went on to create independent x86-compatible CPU designs. See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD%E2%80%93Chinese_joint_venture
