Apple Sources Leading-Edge Glass Substrates for Big Data-Center Chips

The Elec is reporting that Samsung Electro-Mechanics has supplied glass substrate samples to Apple, expanding its presence beyond Broadcom. These substrates replace traditional organic core materials with glass, offering higher surface flatness and lower thermal expansion, which reduces warpage in large AI chips. Broadcom, a major custom AI chip designer collaborating with tech giants like Google and Meta, has been receiving these samples since last year. Apple, also working with Broadcom on AI server chips, is evaluating Samsung's glass substrates, possibly to design its own server chip packaging. Samsung Electro-Mechanics aims for mass production after 2027. Securing Apple as a customer would boost Samsung Electro-Mechanics's glass substrate business.
