AMD acquires SiPho specialist Enosemi

Recognizing interconnect's role in scaling out computing and the nascent role of copackaged optics, AMD has acquired Enosemi. Copper chip-to-chip connects top out at ~200 Gbps today. That's slated to double soon and possibly double again with the emergence of bidirectional links. Beyond that, even chip-to-chip links may need to be optical. Before that, however, twinax copper intersystem connections will run out of gas. Copackaged optics (CPO) stand to reduce system power while raising per-link throughput. Chip companies Broadcom, Intel, and Marvell have invested in this technology, and AMD is now on track to participate in the CPO revolution by acquiring Enosemi.
